"Learning how to work together."
-Kaiden ZHS
"Discussion analyzing data can make project more interactive in academic sectors."
-Amrit UNM
"Discussions help to reinforce what we study in class. Raises questions that make us go back to read and research to help answer those questions."
-Caleb UNM
"This project promotes STEM education by engaging younger students in hands-on learning. Teaching Zuni school students helped reinforce our own understanding while inspiring interest in science and engineering through practical demonstration and outreach."
-Samanta UNM
"Reinforces concepts from photovoltaics, power systems, and energy economics. Provides hands-on experience with solar design tools (e.g., PVWatts, SAM). Encourages interdisciplinary learning—blending engineering, sustainability, and financial analysis. Prepares students for real-world roles in renewable energy design, consulting, or policy-making. Useful as a portfolio project for internships or graduate school applications."
-Bhavya UNM
"For students -- learning about photovoltaics, For us -- understanding how to explain problem solving processes"
-Tawhida UNM
"This can be put into a resume as experience. Some elements of engineering and energy alternatives. Especially in the way it makes the production of energy more Eco-friendly and efficient"
-Jordan ZHS
Amrit
Amrit Dahal is a dedicated and curious graduate student currently pursuing a master’s degree in electrical engineering at the University of New Mexico. He completed his undergraduate program form Advanced college of engineering and management Nepal. With a strong interest in power systems, circuit simulation, and renewable energy technologies, Amrit is focused on building a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of electrical engineering.
Bhavya
My name is Bhavya Sree, and I’m currently pursuing my master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico. I’m originally from India and have a strong interest in network systems and wireless communication. After graduation, I hope to work in the tech industry, focusing on innovative solutions in network optimization. In my free time, I enjoy working on hands-on projects and exploring new tech trends.
Caleb
I am a third-year PhD student in the Optical Science and Engineering Program, originally from Accra, Ghana. I double as a research assistant in Dr. Busani’s group, currently working on the fabrication and characterization of Thin Film Lithium Niobate waveguides for Photonic Integrated Circuit applications.
Samanta
I am Samanta Zeesan Alam, and I am a Masters student in Electrical Engineering, with a major in Power Systems. I’m really interested in how electricity works, how we can make better power systems, and how we can use energy in smarter and cleaner ways. I want to use what I learn to help solve real-world problems in the energy field and make a positive impact on the world.
Tawhida
I'm Tawhida Kabir, a graduate student in the Electrical Engineering department at UNM. I'm Bangladeshi and I was born and raised in Dubai. I'm passionate in making engineering education accessible to all, and I'm excited to utilize my skills, knowledge and experience in the Optoelectronics track in ECE to assist Zuni High School students in maximizing their exposure and understanding of photovoltaic systems.
Jordan
My name is Jordan Zunie. I am currently a sophomore at Zuni High School, thinking about pursuing an education in Aeronautical engineering and planning on going to college for my bachelors degree. I really like working on passion projects such as coding for games, working on acoustics, learning about new technologies, and collaborating with my peers on projects.
Kaiden
I am Kaiden Roughface , I am half ponca on my dads side but i am a sun clan on my moms side but i don't exactly know what ponca is other than the name honestly. I am unsure of what to do after i'm done with highschool i am still thinking of it honestly was thinking of acting or voice acting or something im still thinking about that but i was thinking of taking a break from school until i feel ready again y'know for collage or i probably wont go at all i'm not sure yet
Kelby
Rikki
I am Rikki Cachini, I am 16 years old, and I am a sophomore at Zuni High School. My clans are a crow and a child of a crow. My plan after high school is to go to college and learn engineering and coding if I can or to help take care of my parents and get a job to help my mom. My interests are learning about engineering, coding, and mathematics. My other interests are skateboarding, sketching, and video games. I really don’t have anything that I disliked about working with the UNM students, they helped us with our project and gave us feedback on what we missed or made a mistake on.
Community Applications
"Learning how to improve the community."
-Kaiden ZHS
"Interaction among the community people discussing the positive impact of the projects."
-Amrit UNM
"Knowledge from photovoltaics could used to come up with a plan to help a community with regards to power needs. This helps individuals economically as well, since PV systems will be cheaper than local utility. Helps to protect the environment as well."
-Caleb UNM
"This project can inspire and educate younger students in the community, promoting interest in STEM fields. It fosters mentorship, encourages learning through real-world examples, and strengthens the connection between educational institutions and local schools."
-Samanta UNM
"Helps homeowners understand their energy use and explore solar options. Promotes sustainability by encouraging clean energy adoption. Can be used in local outreach programs or workshops on energy efficiency. Assists policymakers or nonprofits in developing solar incentive strategies. Inspires community-wide solar initiatives or group-buying programs."
-Bhavya UNM
"Increasing engineering education knowledge amongst high school students"
-Tawhida UNM
"I firmly believe this would be excellent information on how energy can be saved in Zuni, lowering cost and having a more known foundation of alternative energy and how it is a great investment. This can be a spark of inspiration for not only Zuni residents, but for the tribal government to commit funding towards better, more efficient, and cleaner energy"
